Below is some of the feedback you have about Yahoo's deleting of ScifiNoir. Again. Thank you for the support and help!

| Hello Tracey,
Real sorry to hear about the site being taken down. Things are getting very
crazy with civil liberties and everyone looking for a reason to censor. I
had been meaning to sign up for the list again now that I have some free
time but I guess I will have to wait.
Anyway, my idea for a new domain name is either scifireloaded.com or
scifinoirreloaded.com. They're both available.
I hope everything is going well with you and your family. Things are cool
here just staying busy.
Take Care,
Joseph |
Thank you for the notice. I only lurked at SciFiNoir because the volume was
more than I could handle. Please send a followup when you have the new portal
going. I will warn you that phpBB has a number of security holes which have
been exploited by worms in the last year and it is very resource-intensive.
There are text-based perl BB's which may work better than that one.
I look forward to the new portal (which may be more manageable than yahoo--it
never scales well beyond a certain posting volume).
The deletion of your list also freaks me out a bit because I'm involved on
several Star Trek slash lists. Slash is always prone to getting deleted (for
legal reasons if nothing else) so the deletion of a well-established,
legitimate list like yours is very troubling.

I've emailed everyone I have an individual email for in my SciFi Inbox.
SciFiNoir has recently been axed by Yahoogroups, because a member
mistakenly violated policy by posting an article unattributed (I MAY BE
WRONG HERE AND AM OPEN TO BEING CORRECTED).
I enjoyed SciFiNoir.
I don't know if there has been an attempt to get the band back
together. If there HAS been, please send a shout out letting us know
what's what.
If there has NOT been, we've got three options. They are not mutually
exclusive.
1. Start up another list for the same purpose, and get the word out.
2. Figure out whether Yahoo applies the rules selectively so as to get
a better sense of whether there was something non-ordinary about what
happened to SciFiNoir.
3. Go back to business as usual.
I am not really interested in taking a vote here. As it stands this
list is very very very long, and a discussion can easily veer off into
the void.
What I am interested in doing is sharing information about attempts to
do one of the above. If Tracy or anyone else has created something
that I'm not aware of, please share it here. Although we won't get the
lurkers or anyone posting before say November 2004, I got damn near
every other individual on here.
If people are interested in the second option, this is what I suggest.
Create a new yahoogroup, give it whatever name you'd like, then send an
LA Times article unattributed....and report back to say what happens.
I believe the only thing that can happen is that your email group will
be dissolved. Perhaps your yahoo email will be taken away--I don't
know.
If there is anything important that I missed please let me know. If we
bring that beat back, I don't care what the name of it is. I don't
care about how it is administered. I don't care who takes credit. I
don't care that New Jersey lost in four to Miami...get my drift?
Let's do this.

Tracy,
I fear that scifinoir fell victim to the current paradigm politics of the day. Given the current climate, sites devoted to anything that calls itself 'dark' anything is taking a risk. Your site was excellent and popular. I regret that you've been censored out of business.
I'm interested in helping you to build a new site, specifically in the area of fiction writing and critiquing and woman centered/feminist spec fiction and urban fantasy.
Scifinoir is not alone in being persecuted. I have recently moved to a very conservative community in which the Harry Potter books are not available in our local public library because they are "demonic" and promote "blasphemy." This made me gasp.
A topics course at our university, The Literature of the Supernatural (think Hawthorne, Poe, King, here, not Poppy Z. Brite) was picketed again as being blasphemous, as were two performances of The Vagina Monologues as being obscene and violating community standards.
I'm an assistant prof in the English department, and choose my texts and reading materials very carefully, these days.
I teach online and have moderated two sites, one devoted to urban fantasy and one, a writer's online workshop.I can send a vita and credentials if you would like as you make moderator choices.
Best regards,

Hi Tracey,
I heard that Scifi Noir was shut-down by Yahoo without any explanation. This is outrageous! I work in the Interactive industry and I do a significant amount of business with Yahoo. Although due to work commitments I have been unable to contribute to the group over the last year or so, I think Scifi Noir is a unique and valued destination for speculative thinkers of color. I would be more than happy to speak with my contacts at Yahoo to find out exactly why the list was shut down and how to redress this wrong. I'm certain that I can make some progress given the hundreds of thousands of dollars I've spent with Yahoo this year alone. Please let me know if you would like my assistance - in fact, I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to help out. It is not often that I am able to use my professional clout to "hook up my peeps :)." Feel free to contact me via email or at (201) 790-3758.
Be well,

Hold up...wait a minute...are you telling me that SciFiNoir
got deleted?! Lawd ha'mercy! I keep warning folks about
using these corporate systems, but Negroes are hard-headed
and don't want to listen. What about SciFiNoir_Lit? Oh wait,
I see it's at least still there.
OK, I'm going to be blunt, ya'll need to make a decision,
and it's time to make it now. I can get us a new permanent
home for both lists, one that won't dissappear or censor our
conversation, but I'm not going to do nothin' if folks are
going to be whining about how they want massa Yahoo! back.
Obviously, Tracey has the most say about this, but I assume
she'll be looking for other input as well. In any event, if
you're ready to leave the plantation, let me know.

| Tracey,
I, too, want to be included in any future plans or incarnations of
SciFiNoir. I have also composed a letter of complaint to SBC/Yahoo since
they are my ISP. They shouldn't be able to delete data without first
apprising the group owner of the impending action.
Thanks,
Jan

Customer Service
Yahoo! Inc.
701 1st Ave.
Sunnyvale, CA 94089
Dear Sir,
On approximately April 29, 2005 the list SciFi Noir disappeared from my list of groups at http://groups.yahoo.com/. Initially, I assumed that Yahoo was having a software or hardware glitch. However, since that time the group has determined that Yahoo terminated the list saying that we violated a rule within the terms of service. What the violation was, no one at the company will say. Who the violator was is also a mystery. Therefore this is a protest letter. Does a true customer service department exist at Yahoo?
When I joined several years ago, I read the terms of service carefully. I was concerned that any fictional work that I posted might be considered the property of Yahoo. Therefore, I’ve never uploaded any of my work other than journal-like entries. Due to work, I’ve only participated in conversations sporadically. I was always aware that I was playing in Yahoo’s play area, just as a child in a McDonald’s play area. However I was sure that if this particular McDonald’s decided to boot a hypothetical child out of their play area, they would explain why—and they wouldn’t destroy the entire play area because of one child having a tantrum. Where is our notification? Who deserves the riot act? And why?
I don’t really need yahoo to tell me what was going on in the days before the list’s deletion. Like others, I subscribed to the digest of SciFi Noir. I remember what conversations I was monitoring. I had uploaded a link to the snopes.com. There was a thread on Star Trek and pedophilia and the attendant fear that all Trekkies would be painted with a scarlet ‘P”. If some programmatic data trawler deleted the list because of the word “pedophilia”, surely this was a mistake! It would be more sense if such a program unsubscribed the offender and notified the moderator of the offense. As a computer engineer, I know that I could silence my own pager by writing code that caused a program to self-destruct after a crash. My cubicle would be very quiet indeed! No more complaints about that program! But no, I don’t think that any programmer would write code that simplistic. I’ve been on lists (including other yahoo lists) where a member was warned and then booted from the list after repeated violations. Why wasn’t that process followed here? We will never know. It’s possible that some external software glitch did destroy the list and Yahoo is too embarrassed to admit that fact. Is it possible that some parent complained after discovering that speculative fiction is an adult topic? (Check the average age range for Locus magazine—please.) We will never know. It’s easier to brush off the question by pointing to entire TOS document and not engaging in a true dialogue.
Meanwhile, SciFi Noir is gone. The photos that I uploaded from three years of Worldcons—gone. The list of links to other African-American web sites uploaded by the moderator—gone. The conversation on the last three episodes of Enterprise—gone. The “family” arguments politics, religion and SF—gone. The member announcements of the first publication—gone. And lastly, the loyalty of this particular customer—gone. The difference is that my TOS provides that I tell you why.
Sincerely,
Ms. Marian Moore

| Hey Tracey,
It's ridiculous that Yahoo deleted the group but I've heard about it
happening and I'm not surprised.
I think you should keep the name SciFiNoir and do a variation like
SciFiNoirOnline.com--->available (I think this one is the best and you
should snatch it up tonight!),
SciFiNoirWeb.com, --->available
SciFiNoirPortal.com, --->available
Sci-Fi-Noir.com --->available
I checked and several other variations are available too. Screw that
other guy, he's full of it anyway. It's a very cool name and you are
the person doing something with it, not him. If you have a PayPal
account, I can donate some money on Friday to help pay for this.
From your list of ways to get involved, here's what I can do:
-Moderate a specific topic on the forum
-Submit commentaries, essays or a rant from a previous post
That's about all I can firmly commit to right now.
I say don't waste your precious energy worrying about the yahoo's at
Yahoo and focus on the portal. Maybe it's the universe's way of saying
it's time to move on.
You have my support,

Hello
That's truly unfortunate, and I'm sorry for the loss. I hope you're able to get things back up and running ASAP.
There are other e-mail group services, MSN and Google, to name a few. I've read on your site that there'll be a message board (on a domain/website) and that's great but are you going to also establish and maintain a new e-mail group using one of the other services?
I personally like Google Groups, I don't think you would experience the same difficulties there, especially from over zealous censors. But, MSN Groups are almost exactly like Yahoo, in functionality, with Photo Albums, Chat, etc. Both are free and create an ease of communications.
Anyways, since you no longer have a Yahoo Mail account I was wondering if you'd like a Google GMail account? I have nearly 40 invites remaining and you're welcome to one, since it's free and offers a lot of space (2gigs).
Good luck on the implementations for the new SciFiNoir. Thanks for the update

Hello again
Thanks for actually reading my message, and responding -- I'm sure you're busy, especially with all the chaos.
I had forgotten about listservs -- that's definitely a good deal and the domain will provide security since that'll be yours, even if you have future problems with a host, you can just move on while keeping the same web address.
Anyways, I'm writing this mainly to let you know about a really cheap and realiable web host (if you haven't already signed up with the Hong Kong company): DayanaHost.com (they're Canadian). I've hosted my sites with them for 3+ years now and haven't encountered any problems.
One of their better plans is the 30mb for 30 bucks a year, with 6 gigs of monthly transfer.
FindMyHost.com has a helpful listing of web hosts, with user reviews and recommendations.
I've been into web design and development since 97, actually went to school for it. If you need any help with anything I'm willing to help, pro bono of course, if I can because I'm eager to start using a site like you're planning. I'm familiar with MovableType and WordPress but also the portal systems, like PHPNuke.
Good luck again with everything. Thanks, LC.

| Hi Ms. deMorsella,
I'm not a member of the group, but your message was forwarded to my Yahoo writing list as a warning of what could happen.
Have you tried signing up at Smartgroups (www.smartgroups.com)? It works very much like Yahoo, is quite civilized and owned by Brits, who are, generally, more cosmopolitan than Yahoo Americans. :)
Good luok in resurrecting the group. I find it interesting that Yahoo allowed someone to fraudulently assume ownership of a list I was on and did nothing about it, but thinks a discussion on pornography is grounds for cancellation.
Skewed world.

Well, I'm sorry to here that. But they haven't deleted the people. We're still here. We can just start another group. But I guess first we should try and find out the problem to see if we want to associate ourselves with yahoo any longer.
I hope SciFiNoir_Lit is still up? It was the other day. That's one immediate place where we can still meet in the meantime. I think any topics from the previous deleted group would be welcomed considering the circumstances and that Lit is probably composed of a lot of the same people.
I am disturbed that they have not given you a specific reason. That I think is mandatory.

lets pool some money over paypal and get some space at hostgator.com or

it was a good little group. i don't understand all the
details -- but i know as a fact that the majority of
real c\sexual child abusers are getting away with bloody
murder while the system turns a deaf ear/blind eye and

there...
that our group (i haven't said anything since 2001 but i
stayed in...i was uh, writing) got violated...can you
say selective choosing? it's sort of awaste..i know you
will stay interested in what you were interested. those
of intellect will have to be strong and resourceful --
as we know, Idiots Rule -- if temporarily.
it's too bad. but yahoo i owned by one of the richest
men alive. naturally there is 'friendly fascism' here. i
fully intend to go on using the facilities anyway --
they can opnly stop me if i choose to be stopped bytheir

on a similar note the books of samuel r. delany would
make fantastic movies. but the industry has yetto catch
up with his sort of literature, combining the artfulness
of a H. Miller with the sci fi granduer of an asimov or
a Heinlein. he is literature...thats' whatthe group
meant to me.
somewhere two fifteen yearolds are doing it. GOOD.

got this from someone else who lost a group. I wonder if this could
have anything to do with the rash of group closings?
Hello everyone,
Please excuse the cross-post.
I recently had a conversation with a friend of mine who happens to be a
very good hacker. We were discussing the recent rash of groups being
closed on yahoo after the group owner's id were hacked and I got some
very interesting information I wish to pass on.
The hackers who delight in hijacking yahoo ids and passwords, rely
mainly on an event that yahoo uses regularly to convince you to give up
your user id and password. They utilize a fake yahoo signing page to get
your information.
We all on occasion, check out the profiles of various people we come
across while in either chat, pm or groups. Many of us automatically
reject profiles that are blank or have obvious links to spam or porn.
However, we will click on links found in interesting profiles in order
to find out more about the person.
So we click on one of the links on the profile and we are now faced with
a Yahoo Sign-in page. We automatically assume that it's just yahoo and
we go ahead and enter our user name and password and we click
Sign-in...sending our user id and password to a pisher.
The following profile link has a link that will take you to a phishing
page. The links is the second url listed.
rships_black_rulers>
http://profiles.yahoo.com/tanya_worships_black_rulers (yahoo profile)
ships_black_rulers/>
http://www.geocities.com/tanya_worships_black_rulers/ (fake yahoo Sign
in
page)
Notice that this is a geocities .com page and not a Yahoo page. Only a
link to a yahoo page, will bring up a Yahoo Sign in page which is now
very different in format.. Everytime you click on a link to a page
outside yahoo and you get a Yahoo sign in page, check the adress bar to
see what is written there.
This is why many Group Owners as well as the ordinary yahoo users are
having their yahoo accounts closed. Yahoo will not admit the problem,
but simply state that there was a TOS violation that caused the
deactivation of the account. They are correct, however, its not the
owner of the account who violated the TOS..it's the hackers who have
violated the TOS.
Please forward this information everyone you know with a yahoo account.
Jeff |

when you get SFN v2.0 running. I dont want to miss it. I am on a lot

...this sounds like some PATRIOT ACT crap. having once been on the

triggered some keyword alert that prompted the gubmint to complain and
get that list TOS'd?

I would like to add my voice to the dissent as well. It's been some time
since I donned the old noble and to my mind underused persona of Citizen
Outrage. The times seem to call out for it. It should be nice to see how
it still fits. Would an extra expression of sincere personal indignation
added to the fray be welcome? I cannot express well enough here how very
put out the whole affair has me. It can be sent off - any length and
style, any amount of huff and bray - as soon as this evening, if you like.
Give the word and it's done.

Bravo! I will write a letter. I wanted to make sure that I would not

I wish I knew the reasons they were terminated. No list owner I know
has ever been able to get anyone at Yahoo to give a reason of any
sort other than a generic violation of the TOS.
Bosco |
Deleting the archives just seems... purely spiteful. Five years of
heartfelt communication, some of if noteworthy, carelessly leeched into
the aether. Shameful, shameful.
Brent :-( |
Yeah, when Yahoo! nukes a forum they won't get specific on the details. I
assume its to protect the identity of the individual making the complaint.
In the case of those moderators who've been using their forums to wreak
havoc and harass others, such an approach is fine. But the problem is that
there is no appeal process. It is arbitrary and at the discretion of
whichever Yahoo! TOS staffer is reviewing the complaint.
What they need to do is temporarily take a group offline when they believe a
complaint to be credible and then give the group moderator an opportunity to
rebut the complaint. The manner in which complaints are handled now leaves
no way to correct errors or ascertain the full facts of a situation.
Unfortunately, I don't think there is any recourse for you. The archives
and member list are most likely gone.
